Conversing With Followers Of Other Faiths

A course of study: Helping followers of Jesus to have constructive and assertive conversations with followers of Muhammad

How will the course benefit me?

You'll learn how to have constructive and assertive conversations with Muslim neighbours/workmates/friends. The course will give you theological information in plain language coupled with a personal strategy for action.

As well, the course will provide you with a 'Toolkit' of thinking and communication skills, which you can apply to any different worldview or challenging situation in your life.

About the course

The relationship between Islam and Christianity is one of the most challenging in the world today.

The course has two parts. Firstly, the course models an approach for thinking about complex topics (in this case, Islam and Christianity). These 'ancient' thinking approaches are Bible based and supercharged for dealing with complex problems.

Secondly, the outcomes from this way of thinking are applied to the task of helping Christians communicate effectively with Muslims.

Topics that will be covered:

  • An 'inside view' of Islam and how they tell their story. How do we develop a Christ-like attitude towards people of other faiths?
  • The transforming power of stories. What could my story be?
  • A big picture view of the Bible's story – Adam to Abraham to Christ (God's story)
  • A high level view of the time from Jesus to Muhammed (A closer look at Humanity's story)
  • The life of Muhammed (a person's story)
  • The testimony of Daniel Shayesteh (a person's story)
  • Introduction to basics of Islam and The Qur'an
  • Theology of Allah compared to the God of Israel, Muhammed and Jesus according to the Qur'an
  • Living out the gospel of Christ in a pluralistic world. What is my strategy?
  • Shari'a – the Law of Islam compared to the Grace of Christ. How can I persuade people about Christ?
  • Muslim approaches to propagating their faith. How can I better prepare myself for assertive and open conversations with followers of Muhammed?
  • Continuing to build relationships with followers of Muhammed sustainably. How will I take action?

This course will:

  • Count as one subject towards obtaining a Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology;

  • Cost considerably more because it is accredited and the assessments will be marked by lecturers.

There will be no formal prerequisite. Students, however, will need:

  • Good literacy skills;

  • A strong desire to learn new thinking and communicating skills.

Who developed the course?

The course has been developed by Daniel Shayesteh and Michael York.

Daniel Shayesteh was a leading Muslim fundamentalist political leader, a teacher of Islamic philosophy, and a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Army during the 1979 Iranian Revolution. He is now an evangelist for Jesus Christ. Daniel and Mary Shayesteh set up their ministry, 'Exodus from Darkness', to help people like us love and understand people of other beliefs, especially Muslims.

Michael York is a design facilitator and coach. He has a background in Biblical studies, consulting, business and science and is the director of Agency Based Coaching. Michael is also the facilitator for Exodus from Darkness and has provided educational services to ACOM Bible College since 2006. His passion is the kingdom of God and knowing Christ in every dimension of life.

How much assessment will I have to do?

The assessment for the accredited course will consist of four assignments:

  • Exercises
  • Small Group Facilitation
  • Comparison of Beliefs
  • Action Plan

These assessments will also be covered during the non-accredited course (and in Church-based situations) as homework, but they will not be formally assessed.
